[pa'tʃɔːli], Luca, italienischer Mathematiker, * Sansepolcro (bei Arezzo) um 1445, ✝ Rom (?) 1514; Professor für Mathematik in Perugia, Neapel, Mailand, Florenz, Venedig und Rom; Minorit. Sein Werk »Summa de arithmetica, geometria, proportioni et proportionalita« (1487, gedruckt 1494) entwickelte die algebraischen Symbole weiter, machte auf Gleichungen dritten Grades aufmerksam und behandelte das Prinzip der doppelten Buchführung. Die »Summa« war die erste größere mathematische Abhandlung, die gedruckt wurde. In ihr findet sich auch das nach Pacioli benannte lucasche Problem, das in der Entwicklung der Wahrscheinlichkeitsrechnung eine Rolle spielte: A und B knobeln; Sieger ist, wer zuerst sechsmal gewonnen hat. Beim Stand von 5 zu 3 muss der Wettkampf abgebrochen werden. Wie ist der Einsatz aufzuteilen? - Paciolis Werk »De divina proportione« (1509) über den goldenen Schnitt wurde von seinem Freund Leonardo da Vinci illustriert.
